What are Reflexology and Reiki? Reflexology has its roots in ancient healing utilising points on the feet or hands that have an association with various parts and organs in the human body. Manipulation of these points can provide relief for a wide variety of ailments and give a general sense of well being that can last well beyond the immediate treatment. Reiki
(pronounced ray-kee) is a Japanese term usually translated as
"Universal Life Force". It is made up of two ideograms; Rei meaning
"Universal" and Ki meaning "Life Force". However the Bhuddists refer
to it differently - "The Indomitable Power of Being".
About Liz Liz is a Registered Staff Nurse currently working in a large Plymouth Hospital. Liz developed an interest in complementary therapies whilst observing the benefits within mainstream medicine and outside. Taking her interest further, Liz qualified with ITEC as a Reflexologist in July 2005 and has studied alternative therapies further to encompass Reiki. Liz now has a home based practice in a quiet neighbourhood in Plymouth, Devon.
Reflexology is a true complementary therapy, that has ancient roots but was introduced to the UK in the 1960s. The therapist uses gentle manipulation of the feet or hands to treat a wide range of ailments, promoting optimum health and psychological well being.
As a holistic therapy, reflexology treats the individual, not just a set of symptoms and can be effective in alleviating the symptoms of many conditions such as:
Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is all around us. It it is not part of a religious belief system so is available to all. Reiki practitioners utilise this subtle form of transcendental energy and channel its use for healing purposes. Receiving Reiki is a very simple process, but usually produces quite profound effects. The session begins by lying down on a treatment couch, fully clothed, closing your eyes and listening to gentle, soothing music, which helps to produce a state of deep relaxation. Then the Reiki practitioner will gently rest their hands upon you, non-intrusively, in a series of positions from the crown of the head to the feet. Each hand position is held for a few minutes, and during this time healing energy will flow into you, balancing your energy system, releasing stress, soothing pain, and promoting your body’s natural ability to heal itself. As the energy flows, most people will feel warmth, or heat, or tingling from the Practitioner's hands. It is usually a very relaxing experience: some people fall asleep. Other sensations may include seeing coloured lights or feeling as if you are floating. Sometimes people have an emotional release, as emotional turmoil is brought to the surface and dissipated. While Reiki is very effective, it is not a miracle cure, and the effects of Reiki treatments build up cumulatively. To experience the full benefit of Reiki it is recommend that you have four to six full healing sessions. In our experience, this number of sessions are usually enough to sort out stress, tension, anxiety, sleeplessness and emotional problems; physical stuff can take a little longer, but not always. Reiki generally produces long-term beneficial changes, so you do not need to keep coming back for endless Reiki sessions. However, once you have felt how wonderful it feels, you may want to keep coming back and back! No matter what your particular complaint, the general effect of Reiki treatments seems to be to make you feel more laid back, more calm, less stressed and more able to cope. It seems to boost energy levels, raise spirits, and make you feel more positive about things. Stressful situations seem to wash over you. Reiki brings things back into balance. Each reflexology session costs £20.00 Each reiki session costs £25.00 The first treatment will be approx One and a half hours and subsequent sessions will take 45 minutes to 1 hour. 6 of reflexology or 5 sessions of reiki can be booked in advance for £100. The number and frequency of sessions required will depend greatly on the condition and severity of symptoms.
As reflexology is a true complementary therapy to be used alongside orthodox medicine, there are some conditions and contra-indications where reflexology is not recommended. For example Deep Vein Thrombosis, Osteoporosis and Certain stages of Pregnancy are all conditions that may not be suitable for treatment.
